THE QUIET TIDE
CHAPTER ONE

The house
at the water’s edge

Mara returned to the coast on a Tuesday, when the tide was low and the village had not yet decided whether to wake. Beyond the harbor wall, the water lay still enough to hold a second sky.

She carried one small suitcase and the key her aunt had posted three weeks before. There had been no letter. Only the key, wrapped in a square of blue paper.

At the end of the lane, the house looked smaller than she remembered. The window above the porch was open. Somewhere inside, a curtain moved.

A LITTLE MORE FOCUS
02 / MAKING SPACE

Begin with
one clear intention.

A useful plan begins with a choice small enough to act on. Before you add another task to the day, decide what deserves your attention.

Reduce the starting line.

Choose a first step you can describe in a sentence. “Write the opening paragraph” gives you somewhere to begin. “Finish everything” does not.

Clarity is not doing more.
It is knowing what comes next.

A moment to reflect

What is one action that would make today feel meaningfully complete?

24

Fiction: a generous chapter opening, comfortable text measure, and restrained running elements.

Nonfiction: a clear heading system, deliberate emphasis, and space for ideas to stand apart.

03 / EDITORIAL CARE

Keep the voice.
Make the meaning clearer.

Explore editorial support ↗

Original demonstration copy, written for this portfolio. These examples illustrate possible editorial choices; they are not excerpts from a client manuscript.

BEFORE / ORIGINAL SAMPLE

When Mara arrived back at the house again, she could see that the window upstairs was open, which was strange because she remembered closing it before she had left. She felt a feeling of unease.

AFTER / LINE EDIT

When Mara returned, the upstairs window was open. She remembered closing it before she left. Unease settled in her chest.

The editorial choices

Removed repetition (“back” and “again”), broke a long sentence into deliberate beats, and replaced an abstract phrase with a more immediate sensation. The event and viewpoint remain intact.

BEFORE / ORIGINAL SAMPLE

The chapters introduces three habits, each of them help the reader build a routine thats easier to maintain.

AFTER / COPYEDIT

The chapters introduce three habits, each of which helps the reader build a routine that’s easier to maintain.

The editorial choices

Corrected subject–verb agreement, connected the clauses, and added the missing apostrophe. This is a language correction rather than a change to the author’s argument.
